Not Feeling Like Yourself

Not feeling like yourself

You Might Be Noticing

Getting through the day but feeling like you are watching yourself from the outside, disconnected from what is happening around you or within you.

Responding to things in ways that feel out of character, or noticing that the version of you showing up lately does not feel like the real one.

Carrying different versions of yourself for different people or situations, and losing the thread of who you actually are underneath all of it.

Nothing is necessarily wrong on the outside, but something on the inside feels off, flat, or like a version of yourself you have lost the thread back to.

You Might Be Noticing

Finding yourself in the same relationship dynamics again and again, even when you are trying to do things differently.

Wanting connection but finding it hard to let people in, or feeling disconnected even in relationships that matter to you.

Getting triggered in relationships in ways that feel bigger than the moment, and not understanding where the intensity is coming from.

Putting others first to the point where your own needs, opinions, or sense of self gets pushed aside to keep things comfortable.

Why It Can Feel So Hard to Find Your Way Back to Yourself

If you have spent time trying to describe what is wrong and found yourself unable to, you are not alone. Feeling disconnected from yourself is one of the hardest experiences to put into words, and one of the most common reasons people find their way to therapy.

It often develops gradually, sometimes as a result of carrying too much for too long, sometimes as a response to earlier experiences that pulled you away from your own needs, feelings, and sense of self. For many people it is connected to parts of them that learned to adapt, perform, or protect rather than simply be. Understanding that connection is often where something begins to shift.

Building a Clearer Sense of Self

When you have lost the thread of who you are, rebuilding a relationship with yourself is often the most meaningful first step. This might look like slowing down enough to notice what you actually feel, think, and need, and beginning to reconnect with the parts of yourself that have gone quiet.

Parts-based work is particularly well suited to this experience because it starts from the understanding that we are not one single unified self but a collection of parts, each with their own feelings, roles, and ways of showing up. When we feel like we are not ourselves, it is often because certain parts have taken over while others have gone quiet.

Getting to know all of those parts, including the ones that have been pushed aside, can be where a more genuine and grounded sense of self begins to emerge.

Mindfulness helps you slow down and begin to notice what is actually happening inside you, separate from the noise of what you think you should be feeling or who you think you should be. Over time this can help you reconnect with a more authentic sense of yourself in the present moment.

Sometimes not feeling like yourself is tied to deeply held beliefs about who you are, what you deserve, or what others need from you. CBT can help bring those beliefs into awareness and begin to examine whether they are actually true, or whether they are patterns that developed long before you had any say in the matter.

Exploring What Got You Here

For many people, not feeling like themselves is connected to earlier experiences that gradually pulled them away from their own sense of self. Understanding what those experiences were and how they shaped you can be where something begins to shift in a more meaningful and lasting way.

When feeling disconnected from yourself is rooted in earlier experiences that were distressing or overwhelming, EMDR can help process what is underneath. Rather than talking extensively about what happened, EMDR works at a level beyond words, helping your brain begin to reprocess the experiences that are still shaping how you see yourself and move through the world today.

Parts-based work is central to this kind of exploration because so much of who we become is shaped by the parts of us that developed in response to early experiences. Understanding what those parts are carrying, and helping them feel safe enough to soften a little, can create space for a more whole and authentic sense of self to emerge. This is often some of the most meaningful work someone can do in therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and this is actually one of the most common ways people arrive at therapy. Not being able to name what is off does not mean nothing is wrong. It often means something important has not yet had the space or language to emerge. That is exactly the kind of thing therapy can be a space for.

No. You do not need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a clear explanation for why you feel the way you do. Feeling like something is off, feeling lost, or simply not feeling like yourself is a valid and meaningful reason to reach out.

That is a really important question and one worth bringing into the room. For some people not feeling like themselves has been present for so long that it feels like just the way things are. Therapy can be a space to gently begin exploring what else might be possible, without any pressure to become someone different.

It can be, though not always. For many people feeling disconnected from themselves developed gradually in response to earlier experiences, relationships, or environments that did not allow them to simply be who they were. Exploring that connection is something we can do together when and if it feels right.

Yes. I offer virtual therapy to adults across Ontario including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Ottawa, Burlington, Oakville, London and beyond. Sessions are held via Jane, a secure PHIPA-compliant platform.
