Why Anxiety is Often More than Just Worry

Anxiety is your nervous system doing what it learned to do to keep you safe. For many people, what shows up as anxiety in the present is connected to earlier experiences, not a character flaw, not something you are making up, and not something you simply have to manage forever.

Building Steadiness & Practical Tools

Finding ways to manage what is coming up in your day to day life is an important first step. This might look like building a greater sense of presence, reducing the intensity of anxious moments, and developing steadiness so that anxiety no longer has to run the show.

CBT helps you become more aware of the thought patterns that fuel anxiety and begin to build a different relationship with them. Rather than trying to eliminate anxious thoughts, we explore how they connect to how you feel and what you do, and work toward responses that feel more helpful.

DBT offers practical skills for managing intense anxiety in the moment. This includes tools for tolerating distress, regulating emotions, and staying grounded when things feel overwhelming. These skills can make a meaningful difference in day to day life.

Mindfulness helps you learn to notice anxious thoughts and feelings without being immediately pulled into them. Over time, this creates a little more space between the anxiety and your response to it, which can be one of the most powerful shifts in managing how anxiety shows up.

Exploring the Roots of Your Anxiety

Anxiety can sometimes be rooted in past experiences that continue to get sparked in the present. When this is the case, managing symptoms can offer temporary relief, but going deeper can be where something begins to shift in a more lasting way.

For anxiety that is connected to earlier experiences, EMDR can be a helpful way of processing what is underneath. Rather than talking extensively about what happened, EMDR works at a level beyond words, helping your brain begin to process distressing memories so they no longer activate the same level of anxiety in the present.

Sometimes anxiety is driven by a part of us that learned to stay on alert as a way of staying safe. Parts-based work helps us get curious about that part, understand what it is carrying, and begin to build a different relationship with it. When that part no longer has to work quite so hard, the anxiety it drives can begin to ease.

The pace and direction of our work is always guided by what feels most right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Therapy can be a helpful space for exploring anxiety, understanding where it comes from, and building practical tools for managing it. Whether we focus on the present, the past, or both depends entirely on what feels most useful and right for you.

This is one of the most common experiences people bring to therapy, and not having a clear cause is not a barrier to starting. We might begin by focusing on what is showing up day to day, building tools and strategies that help reduce the intensity of anxious moments and bring a greater sense of steadiness. When and if it feels right, we can also begin to explore what might be underneath. Sometimes anxiety is connected to past experiences that the nervous system learned to respond to, even when the connection is not immediately obvious. Understanding that can be where something begins to shift in a more meaningful way.

Not necessarily, and not right away. We start wherever feels most useful to you. I place a lot of value on a collaborative process. That means checking in regularly about pace, what we focus on, and how things are feeling as we go. You remain in control of what we explore and when. I work with your system rather than against it, which means I pay attention to any parts of you that might feel hesitant or not quite ready, and I respect that. Nothing moves forward without permission. My goal is for therapy to feel like something you are doing with me, not something being done to you. You have more autonomy in this process than you might expect.

Yes. I offer virtual therapy for anxiety to adults across Ontario including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Ottawa, Burlington, Oakville, London and beyond. Sessions are held via Jane, a secure PHIPA-compliant platform.
